The Harrow Club Overview

Each year we run a range of projects covering sports, arts and performing arts, media, music, digital arts and more. Over the school holidays we run camps across the country taking children out of the urban environment to discover the delights of the countryside and coast.

We are a place for firsts. A first trip to the beach, a night-time walk in the woods, an overnight stay without parents, and for some the first place where a child really feels at home and that they have a home. Firsts are especially important, they are part of a child’s development but also, they build an outlook on life and shape pathways that will go on to determine futures, as well as offer a chance to form new interests and friendships.

This is a place, proud, of second chances. We support children who struggle to stay in the classroom to continue in their education and we work with young people who are not allowed in regular youth clubs/sports clubs, so that they can still have some level of engagement and support, even if they are on the periphery. We allow young people to make mistakes, learn and move forward.

We are also a third, safe, space; for the many children who do not always have the support of find happiness in their home or school lives.

Alongside our youth work we also have developed key targeted programmes in recent years as a response to the increasingly complex and overlooked needs of the young people we are working with. Our Moving on Up project aims to keep children in mainstream education before and after the key transition point between Primary and Secondary school. Whilst our Another Way program works with young people who are on the periphery of gangs and criminality, who are at high risk of being groomed and exploited.

There is no better testament to what the Harrow Club can achieve than some of our current youth workers, who have turned their lives around and are now working to keep young people away from criminality and harm. They can show, with immediacy and authenticity, that there can be Another Way, to live life.

History

The Harrow Club was formed in 1883 as the Harrow Mission Church, both funded and designed by old Harrovians from Harrow School. First Missioner William Law recognised the need for provision in the impoverished Notting Dale area and set up the mission with the desire to improve the quality of life for local people, aiding harmony and promoting opportunity.

Since 1883, the Harrow Club has been anchored in the local community, working with young people to address needs related to disadvantage and poverty. Over the last 20 years, the Harrow Club has acquired five satellite clubs in Chelsea, White City, East Acton and two in Fulham.

On top of a range of issues that are affecting disadvantaged young people in the local community, many of our young people have also suffered greatly from the impact of the Grenfell Fire tragedy. The Harrow Club lost four of its young people to the fire.

Since its inception, the Harrow Club has served tens of thousands of children and young people. Today, we work with 500+ children and young people each year.
